Professional Development Presentation - ISTE
Slide 1: International Society for Technology in Education Professional Development presented by Elizabeth Rader.
Slide 2: Frederiksen shares his thoughts on the benefits of being a part of a professional organization (2016). He believes that it is a great way to meet the basic need to stay current in the field. The second benefit discussed was that it adds insight to current trends in education. Another benefit is that individuals are able to meet and interact other professionals in the same field. Within a professional organization individuals are given the opportunity to get involved and share their knowledge. This could lead to a referral, which Frederiksen stated was the most important benefit to some individuals.
Slide 3: One of the resources listed is the Professional Learning Networks. Members are able to interact with other individuals in the field of education from all over the globe. There are currently twenty-two different networks listed. They include various range of specialized groups for educators and administration. This resource helps to serve specific groups of students depending on the educator’s role. There is a network for everyone.
Slide 4: One Professional Learning Network that I felt was beneficial was entitled “Inclusive Learning Network” (International Society for Technology in Education, 2021). Within this network educators are able to see the latest specialized technology that is on the market and how it has been used. The PLN also allows for discussions on more effective practices that will improve opportunities for those learners who are a part of special education. This includes those who need assistance learning and the gifted. This resource will help me serve my students by offering the latest and up-to-date technology. In this specific PLN, the student group that is targeted to benefit are the learners in special education.
Slide 5: ISTE also has blogs on ideas to use technology in the field of education as well as lesson ideas. It also provided resources that could be utilized with in the classroom. The blog also has a topical index to search for specific blogs. Within the blogs are videos and articles.
Slide 6: The most popular blog in ISTE, is Computational Thinking. On this blog educators are able to learn the five key skills needed for computational thinking and how to help their students become computational thinkers. This blog helps serves students by giving insight to utilize computational thinking in the classroom. By teaching students how to think computationally it provides learners with opportunities to work together, build confidence, and find solutions to difficult problems. The blog would be beneficial for all educators, administrators, and teacher leaders.
Slide 7: In 2020, ISTE held a virtual conference for all educators at every grade level. Experts in technology came together to share insights and innovative technology that benefits student learning. ISTE offered hundreds opportunities to impact student learning. Some of the highlighted topics listed were online and blended learning, digital citizenship, equity and inclusion, and media literacy. Those who registered for the conference, also gained access to revisit the sessions and materials for the next 6 months.
Slide 8: The latest conference that ISTE held was ISTELIVE 20. It was held on November 29 through December 5, 2020. If I attended the conference, two of the sessions that I would have enjoyed were “Cha Cha Into Google Slides” and “5 Ways to Enhance Literacy with Digital Tools”.
Slide 9: In the session “Cha Cha Into Google Slides”, Tana Ruder from Wichita Public Schools, presented new ways to utilize Google Slides in the classroom. By understanding how to use or better use the presentation tools, educators are able to showcase student learning through creating ebooks, HistoryFlix, and more. Although I am familiar with Google Slides and PowerPoint and have utilized them in the classroom, there are aspects of the technology that I am not fully aware of. Instead of only learning all new technology, I also like to find news ways to use what I have.
Slide 10: Jessie Erickson, from the Grand Forks Public School system, spoke on 6 ways to use digital tools to improve literacy. In this session, language arts educators learn how to use Google Suite to come up with creative learning activities for students. Although the title stated five ways, these are the six activities that were explored. I have used Google Suite for a couple of years, however I am always searching for ways to improve my teaching and language arts is a current area of focus for our school district.
